Taste and see…

Salt – what is it?

Matthew 5:

11 “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you,
and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.

12 “Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven,
for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

13 “You are the salt of the earth;
but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned?
It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.

Not to get too technical – but – What is this stuff called salt?

Salt is a mineral that is composed primarily of sodium chloride.
Chloride and sodium ions, the two major components of salt, are needed by all known living creatures.
Salt is one of the oldest, most ubiquitous food seasonings and salting is an important method of food preservation.

The taste of salt (saltiness) is one of the basic human tastes.
Salt is involved in regulating the water content (fluid balance) of the body.
(Wikipedia)

It’s a crystalline substance. Under the microscope it is seen as a small white cube.

11 “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you,
and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.

12 “Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven,
for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Verse 11 and 12 seem to describe someone who is a dedicated, sold out believer in Jesus. Satan hates those who follow Jesus. So there will be attempts to persecute and do whatever to harm or discredit such a person.

13 “You are the salt of the earth;
but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned?
It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.

So if you are, if I am indeed that true believer, then Jesus equates us to salt. I did the little study above to see what this stuff called salt really is. I remember looking at salt under the microscope as a 7th grader and it looked pretty much like the cube shown immediately above. My magnification was only probably 25X or less, so not as clear as the above which is shown at 156X. My exposure to salt of late has been; on my car, in my water softener, the cause of my high BP and the thing that makes my favorite potato chips taste really good.

The last item there is the key to Jesus saying. Salt is a seasoning that our body has a natural taste for – we like it!

If salt is pure it tingles the taste buds and we enjoy whatever it is added to or sprinkled on. Salt that is either not pure or has had other stuff added may not have the same effect. Our scripture says that we as Christian believers are like the salt. If we remain true to the things of God, follow Jesus teachings and do not adulterate the teachings of scripture we will be like good, pure salt to the world around us. If we allow false doctrine to creep in and taint our beliefs and / or actions we will become less than pure and move towards being that substance which is good for nothing but melting the ice on the sidewalks and roads here in Minnesota in the winter.

Keep your walk with Him strong and pure and you may very well experience some of the things verses eleven and twelve warn of.

But and you will also have the great joy and experience of being a unique attraction to many in this world, drawing them into the kingdom.
