Spiritual Eye Surgery

Matthew 6 (NKJV)

22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.

23 “But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

For the past two and a half weeks I have been working my way through eye surgery to remove cataracts. This has given me a whole different outlook (no pun intended) way of thinking about eyes. So naturally the above verse caught my attention this morning.

The first verse as translated in the New King James says: If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. I see here an analogy of using the good, clear eyes that He has given us to see the direction that our Heavenly Father would have us go, and then going that way. It might be as simple as reading His Word regularly and using it to direct our actions in life. Use that clear eye to read that we are to “not commit adultery” and then — Duh! — Not committing adultery!

The amazing thing I have seen over the past few weeks is how “unclear” our eyes can become without our noticing. Using the example of my cataracts, I did not really see clearly. I thought I did, but the world was covered with a brown haze. I did not see the world clearly and I did not see it in the correct color. And interestingly, this haze did not come suddenly, or I would have known it was there. Instead it came on over many years. So I thought I was seeing just fine, but in reality I was not. What an amazing thing to look through an eye with this hazy dirty lens removed! The world is so much brighter and clearer… I closed first one eye and then the other probably a hundred or more time to see the difference when I had only the first eye done.

Might this be the same with our Spiritual eyes? Over time with wrong thinking, wrong Theology, wrong teaching and wrong motives on our part – perhaps our Spiritual eyes can also become clouded. We don’t see the things in the world that are really not according to Gods word. We just go along as though this is the normal and right way to do things. Thus through these hazy lens we accept the “if it feels good, do it” principles and philosophies of the world. We accept breaking covenants, modifying the truth and all kinds of variations to Gods commandments because our clouded spiritual eyes just no longer see them. (“…if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness”) “Full of darkness” – read that as the spiritual darkness the devil is deceiving us with.

I could absolutely not see pure white through the clouded lens before my natural eye. To me it was a brownish-yellow and fuzzy. What an awesome thing to see Gods world as it really is again!

Perhaps we ought to regularly ask the Holy Spirit to do spiritual eye surgery on us so that we can again see the world in His Light and not the worlds.

Pray for Clear Spiritual Eyes to see His Truth…

One Response to Spiritual Eye Surgery

  1. Ahhh yes! Insight about sight. Please excuse the pun, but you made it very easy to see the point you were making. Your blog was excellent and extremely thought provoking.
The following line from a song fits well here: “There are none so blind, as those who will not see.” In today’s world it is one thing to not be able to see clearly, but yet another thing to refuse to see at all.
