Secret stuff…

Deuteronomy 29 (NKJV)

29″The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law. {*}

What do you do when you are reading the Bible, and for some unknown reason something just really catches your attention? It may actually stop your reading progress completely as you wonder about the words you just read. Some call this “jumping off the page” but that sounds so Christianise to me…

Well, whatever you call it, it happened to me with the above verses this morning. So I stopped and just pondered them (Ruminated), looked at a few commentaries, and then started a dialog with Dad (My heavenly Dad that is). I am learning that the appropriate question to Him is never “Why”. Graham Cooke says that “the why question is never answered this side of Heaven.”

The better and more appropriate questions are –

  • “What does this mean for me right now?”
    (if you believe in Spiritual things, then you know that things don’t just happen for no reason, in our lives.)
  • The follow on question is “what should I do?”

So – I’m pondering the verse – “The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.”

The last part seems clear – The Words, the Scriptures and Commands that God gives us are given to us so that we can “Do Them!” That means more than just reading them, or having the Pastor read them to us on Sunday morning. It’s even more than “memorizing” them, though that is certainly a good thing to do. It means that we put these words into practice in our lives. More than that, they become the guiding force in our lives. The WWJD(What Would Jesus Do) ideal from the popular book “In His Steps” by Charles Sheldon, becomes a guiding force in our lives. I think I’m clear on that part.

But the first few words still remain a little puzzling – “The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but”

What are the “secret things” mentioned here? Being the inquisitive (nosey?) that I am, I want to know this stuff. But there are things that we don’t need to know, that we couldn’t understand if we did hear them, or even things that we are better off not knowing. Things that will happen in the future for instance are often better not known. Even the end times stuff that many are so enamored with. Would it be good to know? Would it do any good? Would it make us live our lives better? Knowing the time was racing up to us might almost drive us crazy! So I guess that God does indeed know best and there are indeed things that only He should know. And I can say – I’m Good with That!
